Shifters
"The Shapeshifter is not to be confused with the Lycan or a Were. They are a completely different race altogether. A shifter posseses the capability to change shape into any animal it so chooses. The person within the confines of this particular race are only able to shift into an animal that they have seen visually. Whether be it in person, or through the screen of a television. If there has been some sort of visual contact with the animal, then the shifter can take that form. Shapeshifting is generally an inherited trait, although some cases of exchanged bodily fluids have resulted in the transmission of the DNA."
Lycans
"Lycans and Were's are often confused with each other. But there are a few key differences. The Lycans posses the capability to change at will, but are limited to a single form. They still experience the full moon shift. The animal form of a Lycan is different from that of a Were in the aspect that a Lycan's form is very human like. They manage characteristics of both the animal they embody and a human.
There are two breeds of Lycans. Purebloods, and the 'bitten'.
>The purebloods are ones that inherited their lycanthropy through their family. It would have been in their bloodline for generations. Though it is uncertain where exactly this genetic mutation originated from. Species of Lycans are not limited to specific families, and not every member of a family will carry the gene. A father may have the gene, but neither of his children do. But a grandchild of his do. Its a recessive trait, and a rare one as well. Each family member that inherits it will not likely be able to take the same form either.
>The 'bitten'. As the name implies, this includes those who were bitten by a Lycan in their animal state. Their first shift will likely come upon the next full moon. The person who is bitten takes on the form of the one who bit them."
Weres
"A Were is someone who can only take one form, but does not have the capability to change at will. Their shift comes only at the full moon. When they do shift, they take the full form of the animal they posses, not showcasing any human like characteristics.
As with the Lycans, there are one of two ways that someone might become a Were. Being Pureblood, or being bitten. The only difference between the pureblood Lycan and Were is that a Were family only has one form, and only one person per generation may be a Were. Which means that brothers and sisters cannot all have the genetic mutation. Someone bitten by a Were is 'infected' with the same string of Were of the person who bit them."
